International Day of Women and Girls in Science
International Day of
Women and Girls in Science 2022
Part of the episodes of “Research Wednesday Series” at Qatar University
Celebrated internationally since the resolution of the UN General Assembly in December 2015, and placed under the responsibility of UNESCO and UN Women, International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women scientists, while encouraging new generations of girls to face new scientific challenges.
The event aims to advance the gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. This Day is a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology communities and that their participation should be strengthened as drivers for peace and sustainable development.
This year’s Fourth Edition of the International Day for Women and Girls in Science, organized by QU in collaboration with UNESCO Office in Doha and the Qatar National Commission for Education, Sciences and Culture, will focus on the contribution of women and girls towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 6 "clean water and sanitation for all".
Water, the ‘blue gold’, is the most precious natural resource. It is not only essential for survival, but also plays an important role for developing national economies, sustaining the environment and enriching social and cultural dimensions of societies. From this perspective, the value of water is certainly incalculable and limitless. However, the current waste and misuse that we witness in almost every sector is a clear display of the fact that we all too often think of water exclusively in terms of its cost price, without realizing its tremendous value, which is impossible to price.
Throughout the event, women scientists, policy-makers, teachers and experts will each share their knowledge, views and innovations supporting national and global efforts in achieving water security. This will provide an opportunity to showcase the significant contribution of girls and women in science and technology.
