Student Counseling Center
The Student Counseling Center, SCC, is a wellbeing Center providing guided consultancy and psychological intervention through the provision of preventive and intervention services including psychosocial support as well as individual and group counseling services. SCC aims to enhance students’ development, and wellbeing, supporting their psychological needs to help them achieve academic goals and foster their self-development. The SCC serves as a source to help QU faculty and staff interact and deal with students' behavioral issues.
An academic advisor/ faculty/ staff is not expected to provide personal counseling to students and may encourage and facilitate a referral to The Student Counseling Center (SCC) for various cases, including stressed, anxious, and depressed students. There is no one correct way to deal with a student in distress. Each person has his/her own style of approaching others and differing capacities to deal with problems. It is important to know your personal abilities and limits.
An academic advisor/ faculty/ staff can approach a stressed student and articulate:
“I noticed you are feeling stressed lately… (Pause )…We all need some level of stress to respond to challenges. Stress is part of our normal body reactions to enable us to deal with demands… but too much of that stress if it’s not managed properly affects us. There is a center on campus that provides tools, and skills to help us manage stress: The Student Counselling Center. They are ready to talk to you and support you(Pause for questions, maintain eye contact) and I can help you make an appointment”.
You can provide them the Appointment Manager link to schedule a reservation with a counselor:
*Information provided to SCC is confidential, and none of the data becomes part of the student’s academic record. The session is conducted in a private room and it usually takes 50 minutes.
In case you didn't find an appointment, please contact us and we will get back to you.
What topics can be discussed with the counselor?
You can discuss any personal or social concerns. Examples of topics are: stress due to exams and homework, overcoming procrastination and time management, adjusting to college life for new students, family problems, improving social skills such as public speaking and leadership, balancing between marriage life and studies.
If I receive counseling at the center, can anyone find out about it?
What you share with your counselor is confidential outside the counseling center will know about it, unless you request to share information with others after you give us written authorization.
Can counseling help me improve my academic performance?
Yes. Throughout counseling, you will learn new ways to address your issues and to explore personal goals. This will help you improve your motivation for studying.
Will one counseling session be enough to help me achieve my goals?
Some students may benefit from one or two sessions of problem-solving, while some concerns may need more sessions.
Does the Counseling Center provide academic counseling?
The center provides personal counseling mainly. However, your counselor can help you explore your personal goals and interests. This self-knowledge should help you decide which major to study. Your counselor can also help you locate academic counselors.
